Academy of Entrepreneurship
FAQ’s for Application/Magnet Program

Q:   How do I apply to the Academy of Entrepreneurship?
A:    Complete the application as directed and submit by the deadline (February 15th). A completed application includes: application, three teacher recommendation forms, and a transcript of 6-8 grades.

Q:   Where can I get an application?
A:    Applications are available in your middle school guidance office or can be downloaded from our website. Students/parents can go to www.spiritspotbhs.com, click on the “Application” tab and the documents are listed at the bottom of the screen. Applications are also available at the Buchholz Guidance office.

Q:   What criteria are used to determine a qualified candidate for acceptance?
A:    Satisfactory GPA of 2.5 or better, teacher recommendations, clean discipline record, good attendance, and level of interest in entrepreneurship are all important factors in the evaluation process.

Q:   What are the criteria for admittance for students not zoned to Buchholz?
A:    Students not zoned for Buchholz must meet the same criteria and the same application deadline as students who are zoned for Buchholz.

Q:   Are there any special deadlines students should know about when applying?
A:    For students who are zoned to attend Buchholz, applications must be postmarked by February 15th. All acceptance letters to candidates must be mailed by March 7th. All candidates must return acceptances by March 21st. The final list of accepted students is due to the district zoning office by April 2nd.

Q:   What are the deadlines for students who are not zoned to attend Buchholz?
A:    Students must submit their applications postmarked by February 15th. Names of those students will be compiled on a list; after March 21st, those names will be forwarded to the Superintendent’s office. From that list, students will be chosen by computer-generated lottery and will be notified of their selection. If those students have already accepted an invitation from another magnet program in the county, they will be allowed to retract that acceptance and accept the Academy of Entrepreneurship.

Q:   Will all applicants be notified of their application status?
A:    Yes, all Buchholz-zoned applicants will be notified with an acceptance letter or other notification by the district deadline. Students from outside the Buchholz zone will be notified that their application has been received and that their names will be entered into the lottery.

Q:   If I win the zoning lottery, will I be provided with bus transportation to Buchholz?
A:    If you are accepted into the program you will be given magnet-zoning approval to attend Buchholz and qualify for transportation if requested.

Q:   Once I am in the Academy, are there requirements to remain in the program?
A:    Yes, all students must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA in their Entrepreneurship classes and a 2.5 GPA overall. Grades are monitored each grading period. Failure to meet these requirements will result in being placed on probation. Students are required to make a commitment to take one entrepreneurship course each of the four years. Out-of-zone students quitting the program, even as a senior, will return to the home school. Dual Enrollment is not an option for students coming to Buchholz with a zoning waiver.

Q:   Can I apply to both magnet programs at Buchholz?
A:    Applicants are strongly discouraged from applying to both the Academy of Entrepreneurship and the Academy of Finance. You need to decide which program interests you the most and matches your career goals.

Q:   What if I receive acceptances from more than one magnet program in the county?
A:    Students are expected to decide on their preference before accepting an offer. For Buchholz-zoned students, you may only accept one magnet program—students appearing as accepted on more than one magnet list submitted to the district will be denied access to any Magnet/Choice program and will remain at their zoned school. For out-of-zone students, you may accept another magnet program by the District deadline of March 21st.  Your name will still be entered into the Buchholz lottery, and if your name is chosen, you will be allowed to retract your acceptance from the other magnet program and then accept the invitation to attend the Academy of Entrepreneurship.

Q:   As an Academy student, can I enroll in honors or AP courses, and participate in sports, band, etc?
A:    Yes, the majority of students enrolled in Entrepreneurship participate in sports, band, or other activities and also register for honors and AP courses (based on teacher recommendation). The Academy is not a school within a school.

Q:   To whom may I speak if I need further information?
A:    You may call Donna Martin at 955-6702 Ext. 305 or email entrepreneurbhs@yahoo.com.
