The Buchholz Academy of Entrepreneurship is a four-year magnet program for students interested in starting their own businesses, working as business managers or corporate executives, or pursuing various careers in marketing. Due to the outstanding achievements of our students and faculty, we have been chosen as the national high school model for entrepreneurship education by the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education. Our approximately two hundred students excel in a wide variety of activities during their time at Buchholz. Over the past 14 years, the Academy of Entrepreneurship has been a major part of Buchholz, attracting people all over Alachua County.

ACADEMY TEACHER WINS GOVERNOR’S AWARD

Our Academy of Entrepreneurship Director, Mrs. Donna Martin, was presented the Governor’s Award on May 16 by the Florida Council on Economic Education as an outstanding educator showing innovation and creativity in teaching economics, free enterprise and financial literacy. Martin was chosen as the first place winner in the high school Virtual Economies category based on the outstanding performance of her students in their school store, The Spirit Spot. Operation and management of The Spirit Spot are handled by Academy seniors and involve all facets of business operation, including product design, purchasing, pricing, sales, inventory management, financial management, and marketing. Income from store sales is used to support students in competitions at the state and international levels. The store is open before school and during the lunch periods as well as for special events throughout the year. The award ceremonies and luncheon were held at Sea World in Orlando, and winners and their families were given free access to the park for the day. In addition to the Florida Council on Economic Education, the event sponsor was Publix Super Market Charities, and major business sponsors included the Home Shopping Network, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida and State Farm Insurance. Additional information about the event can be accessed here.

UF Business Competiton Winners!

This year’s UF Business Plan competitors were Chelsea Hull, Eric Sandow, Ted Li, Alison Daly, Wilamena Hopkins, and Samantha Hwang. Congratulations to Alison Daly, who won first place for best business plan, and Chelsea Hull, who won first place for best oral presentation; both students won $1000 as prizes. The UF Business Plan competition is an event held at the University of Florida at Emerson Alumni Hall, where high school students from surrounding schools are given the opportunity to develop a business plan and present them before a panel of judges. It is Buchholz’s Academy of Entrepreneurship’s fourth year participating in the competition and we are proud to have so many students going this year. These select students gave an elevator speech over viewing their ideas for a product, service, or project as if they were pitching their ideas to a venture capitalist. This year there were some changes in the format of the presentation, usually the students are given a ten minute time frame for the presentation and the judges ask questions in the remaining five minutes. This year the students have the entire fifteen minutes to present and there will be no question time allotted.

We are proud to announce the success

of the Buchholz Car Show!

The Academy of Entrepreneurship hoisted a car show at Buchholz High School to give local companies in Gainesville an opportunity to be recognized in the community for being involved and supportive of our school, the Academy of Entrepreneurship, and to provide them with advertisement to help reach their target market, teenagers.

In charge of the car show was Austin Brinza: Chief Marketing officer, Alan Hardman: Chief Executive Officer, and Jordan Land. Managers included Lucy Sapp: Chief Operations Officer, Ben Carr: Chief Financial Officer, Brandy Thompson: Chief Information officer, Shaneetra Graham, Clare Rumsey: DECA President, Danielle Barrett, Rachael Rohlman and Brad Gary. The car show is our DECA chapter’s Creative Marketing Project for the school year of 2007-2008, represented by Austin Brinza, Alan Hardman and Jordan Land. It started immediately after school on February 1, 2008, at 3:00 PM on the Buchholz track field located on the lateral side of the parking and ended around 5:00 PM. Sponsors of the Car Show included Boost Smoothie, Gatorland Toyota, Gator Muscle Cars and AP Limos, Interstate Batteries, Maui Teriyaki, The Pearly Whites, Sound Depot and Performance and Town Tire. These businesses had booths set up around the field where they displayed products and services, and some brought out some demo cars. Live entertainment included a DJ and the Pearly Whites, during the event, they held a dance competition and gave away a ton of prizes to various people with the winning ticket numbers, and Chik-Fil-a’s cow had the Chik-fil-a wheel to spin for free food.

This event engaged the chapter members in the marketing community, and provided the opportunity for experienced executives to give and assist in developing the marketing, management and entrepreneurship leaders of tomorrow. It promoted and encouraged the DECA chapter members to recognize marketing as a force for the economic and social good of the community. The students researched and studied the marketing field, planned, conducted and reported the project by the DECA chapter at our State Conference at the beginning of March in Orlando, Florida.
